Meet Bengaluru Dentist Who Will Represent India at Miss Wheelchair World 2017

In Collaboration with Niyati Shinde.

As a saying goes, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. Here is one person who will definitely take your breath away! *drum roll please* Meet Rajlakshmi S.J. A hardworking dentist, a bright assistant professor and a gorgeous aspiring model. Oh, and did we mention that she is a fabulous painter, a soulful singer, a hardcore traveller who has road tripped across 11 countries and an agile swimmer?

Did we also mention that she is a woman of resilience who will be representing India at the Miss Wheelchair World 2017 beauty pageant? Yes, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Rajlakshmi is a powerful example of that.

It was 10 years ago, back in the year 2007, when Rajlakshmi scored so well in her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) exams that she was invited to Chennai to present a paper at the National Conference. Little did she know what faith had in store for her. On the way to Chennai, her vehicle’s driver dozed off while driving and thus, she met with a ghastly accident which affected her spine, which in turn left her lower limbs paralyzed.

Wheelchair bound since then, she did not let this unforeseen turn in her life affect her enthusiasm for achieving and fulfilling her dreams. She went on to pursue Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) degree. Along with that, she completed courses in fashion as well as psychology. To add to this impressive string of feats, she is the chairperson of a charitable trust that works for the benefit of differently abled people. And, she is a participant of many research projects relating to her field of expertise and has presented papers at many national conventions. That’s one amazing and impressive resume to boast of!

Now, to add another feather to her cap and another achievement to her resume, this 31 year old go-getter is all set to represent India at the Miss Wheelchair World in Poland on October 7. Already having won the title of Miss Wheelchair India back in the year 2014, Rajlakshmi is all set to conquer new skies. She’ll be leaving for Poland next week where a new chapter in her life will begin. She has been preparing hard for it; she is on a strict healthy food diet and is also religious about her skin care routine. But she knows that beauty is more than the looks. A beautiful person inside out, Rajlakshmi has been conducting free dental health camps at schools for a while now.

A multitalented, multifaceted lady, she will have no problems during the talent show round of the pageant; she has already successfully participated in wheelchair dance performances as well as matches of wheelchair basketball.

Confucius had once said, “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Come, join us in wishing Rajlakshmi S.J. all the best for her endeavors. May she achieve all her dreams, may she discover newer strength in her wings and explore newer skies, and may she make India proud of her again and again.
